Who We Are

Welcome to the Rainbow Family Support and Advocacy-Africa (RaFaSA), a non-profit organization and activist-led Community-Based Organization (CBO) founded in 2019 by and for LGBTQIA refugees and asylum seekers. Our mission is to provide support to LBTQIA refugee/asylum seeker parents and their children, a dedicated support network for both parents and children. RaFaSA is committed to looking out for LBTQIA refugee/asylum seeker families, including parents, children, dependents, and allies, as well as individuals using drugs and sex workers within the LGBTQIA refugee community.

At RaFaSA, a rainbow family encompasses any Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, or Queer refugee/asylum seeker who has a child/children by any means.

In August 2019, we recognized the social integration challenges faced by LGBTQIA refugee parents and their children. In response to these hurdles, RaFaSA was conceived as a support network with a mission to secure due representation, foster inclusion, and enhance the quality of life for queer refugee families. Born out of the necessity to address the unique plight of LGBTQIA refugee families, both in camps and urban areas, RaFaSA emerged as an organized group.

Our core mission is to empower Rainbow refugee families, liberating them from social marginalization, isolation, and discrimination. We envision a self-sustaining community of Rainbow refugee parents, fostering resilience within our diverse family network.

For the past four years, RaFaSA has operated an emergency safe-house or communal shelter. Currently home to six vulnerable LBTQ refugee parents and six children, this initiative addresses the rampant lack of housing for our focus population. RaFaSA takes pride in providing emergency Food and Rent Food relief; as well as emergency Medical interventions, to the most vulnerable members through various programs.
