At RaFaSA, we believe that every person deserves to be seen, heard, and respected for who they truly are. On this International Pronouns Day, we join communities around the world in affirming the importance of using correct personal pronouns—a simple yet powerful act of dignity and inclusion.

Pronouns are the words we use to refer to someone in place of their name, like she, he, they, or ze. For many LGBTQIA+ individuals, especially transgender and nonbinary people, being referred to by the correct pronouns is not just a matter of grammar—it’s a matter of identity, safety, and respect.

Why Do Pronouns Matter?

Misgendering someone, even unintentionally, can cause deep emotional harm and reinforce systems of exclusion. On the other hand, using someone’s correct pronouns is a small gesture that makes a big impact.

A Global Movement Rooted in Respect

International Pronouns Day began in 2018 to raise awareness about the importance of pronouns in affirming gender identity. It is observed every third Wednesday of October and has grown into a global movement that encourages individuals, schools, workplaces, and communities to:

  • Share their own pronouns in introductions, email signatures, and social media bios
  • Respect others’ pronouns without question or judgment
  • Educate themselves and others about gender diversity and inclusive language

At RaFaSA, We Lead with Love

As an organization rooted in advocacy for LGBTQIA+ refugee families, RaFaSA is committed to creating spaces where everyone feels safe to express their true selves. We encourage our community members, allies, and partners to:

  • Ask for and use people’s pronouns correctly
  • Normalize pronoun sharing in meetings and events
  • Challenge transphobia and cisnormativity in everyday language

Let’s Celebrate, Educate, and Advocate

This International Pronouns Day, let’s recommit to the values of love, humanity, and justice. Whether you’re learning about pronouns for the first time or helping others understand their importance, your voice matters.

Together, we can build a world where everyone—regardless of gender identityis treated with the respect they deserve.
